Training kicked off last Monday for the 2012 season and I was down there to take a few picks. Enjoy

An unofficial Hawthorn Hawks AFL site about the Mighty Hawks

Bit late getting this post out but went down to Waverly on Friday for a training session. One of the features of the session was a number of players in there original home club outfits. A good session by all. I spent a lot of it watching the rucks doing their thing. Check the photos out for more comments.
Left to right: Bateman (York), Birchall (Devonport), Suckling (Wagga Tigers), Rioli (St Marys), Burgoyne (Mallee Park) and Osbourne (Labrador)

First training back after the Tassie community camp and main Intraclub match, and the boys were out in force. Not the most exciting session but here are some of the photos of the boys.
Public training was held Friday before the Round 1 clash with the Demons. Here are some photos (more available here and you can Click for larger copies). Who looks impressive?
Can’t wait! Footy is back and only one sleep away. I don’t know about you but apart from just seeing the boys in the full flight of competition, I think the other exciting thing about round 1 is seeing the new guys, and we have 4. Josh Gibson comes to us after a stellar career so far at North. He will slot into the backline and I see him taking the dangerous forwards that aren’t monsters. He had a rough game against Barry Hall in the NAB Cup, but from all reports, improved in the NAB Challenge. Rhan Hooper comes after a ruff few years in Brisbane. He shows flashes of brillance but trouble off the field and with efforts on the field probably mean he hasn’t reach his full potential.
Then we have the upgraded rookies. Carl Peterson, who we probably saw as a fillin for Rioli, now (to me anyway) looks like the answer to the question “who will replace Willo in the side”. He is 3cms taller and has the speed and leap. Injury/fitness will be the concern, but I think he is a sneaky pick to hold his spot through out the year. Jarrod Kayler-Thompson is a mature age recruit orginially from Victoria but who comes to us after playing well in the WAFL. He looks (even down to carrying the number 45) and plays a little bit like Clinton Young and could fill in that spot for a few weeks.
A quick couple of game notes. It is a replacement game, so Hawks members get in free and the big one, as I understand it, we will be able to go onto the field after the game and have a kick on the MCG. What a great move as long as it happens!

So we didn’t quite Perform the way we hoped, my feeling is that the Hawks had a younger side then the Dogs. Some good signs from some of the young players (including KT and Straton). Don’t forget that you can checkout other photo galleries in the pages above under “Photo”. Enjoy and Go Hawks!
After a good performance in Round 1 against the Tigers, w should have a harder task against the Dogs in round 2. The 3 guys likely to come into the side that interest me most are Sam Grimely (Ruckman and sneaky backman option), Josh Gibson after moving to the Hawks from the Roos in the offseason and Carl Peterson, Second year rookie that is impressing many at training and could be a smokey in fantasy terms especially if Hooper and Rioli are missing with injury. Anyway, here is the side:

After the good NAB Cup Round 1 win over the Tigers (I hope to write up my thoughts soon) the boys returned to Melbourne and back at training. Their were some extra guys in the rehab group from the game (Franklin, Mitchell and Gilham to name a couple) but shouldn’t be too much worries on these guys. The good news was the guys that were in the main group (for the first hour of training that I saw anyway). The guys I was excited to see most were 3 new guys and one young guy that we haven’t seen a lot of. Josh Gibson, Rhan Hooper and Shaun Burgoyne along with second year rookie, Carl Peterson (who is looking lean). I am trying something different with the photos. I will include some photos here and then there is about 100 of them on the following page that you can check out. On these posts I try not to have too many of the same player where as on the Page there are some players that there are many photos of (Shaun Burgoyne just to name one). Here are the photos:

Got down to training this morning. Really enjoyed seeing the drills this morning. A few boys stepped it up and others in the rehab group. Unfortunately won’t be at Open training Friday before they go to Tassie for the NAB Cup opener against Richmond (if anyone does and wants to share commentary/photos, let me know, would love to put them up).
Enjoy the photos below! Who looks good. Don’t hesitate to comment below (have made it easier but will moderate to stop spam).
